So far 2020 has shaped up to be an interesting year. It’s seen a change in attitude towards the organisation of my work and personal life and really been the year where I’ve started to allow myself to enjoy my spare time a little bit more. Last year the saying ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’ had never been more relevant. Being a very ambitious person means I am often guilty of not taking the time to relax and relish in my accomplishments and am constantly thinking about how to achieve the next step in my career.
It wasn’t until last year when I made the career jump and joined a different company that I realised just how much I needed a break. Even the most career oriented people can burn themselves out which is why taking a mental break and giving yourself the time to relax can often be more productive in the long run. I actually find that overworking harms my work ethic and although I'm workaholic and trying my best I end up achieving less.
So with this new attitude and the focus this year being on spending more time on myself I decided it was finally time to start whittling down my travel bucket list. It’s safe to say I have officially been bitten by the travel bug. I have been making up for the past few years of not travelling anywhere by wanting to travel too as many places as I possibly can.
Choosing where to travel to next is one of the hardest decisions to make. Like many other people I have a dream list of places I’d like to visit longer than my left arm. Beautiful countries and cities like Italy, Australia, India, Spain, Maldives, Budapest, Indonesia, Japan, New York and the Mexican coast. I think it’s important to have a list, whether mental or physical, to keep track of all of the places you want to go. So that if an opportunity to travel ever presents itself you have an idea of where you want to go and the things you want to see.
In this day in age getting travel inspiration has never been easier. Gone are the days where holiday breaks were planned by travel agents or by flicking through holiday catalogs. We now have a how to travel guide on our phones thanks to social networking. Instagram, Pinterest and Travel blogs are some of my favourite places to discover new locations to visit. In particular I am Galla, Sasha Juliard, Jack Morris, Jason Charles Hill, Gab Scanu, Gypsea Lust, Calsnape, Sabrina Chakici and The Blonde Abroad. Follow one of your favourite travel bloggers and you're bound to be inspired by some of their beautiful imagery that pops up on your feed. It’s great to be able to get real life travel tips from people who have actually visited the places and getting the opportunity to read their first hand reviews and visually see their own experience. What makes it even better is if any of places really leave you open-mouthed you can save or pin the posts to your feed and remember them forever.
get the look
When looking for somewhere to travel next and what to do there I always think of three main things; where can I create the best memories, where has the best content I can create and where can I get the most out of the money I have. Memories are important as they’re something I can cherish forever as the ones I make with friends and loved ones are memories that I will never forget. I always look for locations to visit when I’m travelling that are truly beautiful which are a spectacle for the eyes. Not just because I am a content creator and always on the hunt for images to fill my feed and accompany my blog posts, but because I want to create a scene in a beautiful picture that I can hold onto forever. I have always done this due to my interest in photography but I find many people do the same thing these days with the instagram culture of getting the perfect shot. For me there is no better keepsake than a beautiful scene captured in time.
When travelling I am looking for accommodation that is mostly practical and near where I am going to be spending the majority of my time. There is nothing worse than having to travel ages after a long day to get to bed. I’m also always on the hunt for something a little special and different. Somewhere that will make my trip more memorable and most importantly comfortable. I find staying in hotels fascinating but there’s so many to choose from its hard to pick the perfect one. I want the best room, with the best view, the best service and the best food so I spend a while comparing different hotels and researching it's location to find one that can give me all of that.
Where to next is a very good question. Last year I traveled to France when exploring Paris, visited The Netherlands when adventuring to Amserdam and even relaxed at the english coastline when staying in Cornwall. This year I still plan on having a couple more week or weekend getaways and I’m thinking Italy, Spain or India is next on the agenda. Either way wherever I go I am feeling very inspired to maximise the the potential of my time off work and go to as many more places as humanly possible. I hope that this post has done the same for you so that we can all finally tick some travel destinations off our travel bucket list.
